Before playing King Leonidas in ‘300’ Gerard Butler was relatively unknown. While waiting for ‘Phantom of the Opera’ to be released he took on the role of BEOWULF in international co-production Beowulf & Grendel. The production encountered ferocious Icelandic storms, volcanoes, leaky viking ships, financial desperation and endless setbacks. Before the first day of principal photography some of the crew were already wondering if they had angered the Norse Viking gods.
